Philippines Scholarship Awarded

IARFA_building

At our latest High Performance Camp at the ASB Sports Centre in Wellington New Zeaand we were honoured to be able to host Coach Josh Reyes and Coach Nash Racela from the popular Gilas Philippine National team. Gilas Philippine became famous for their ability at the recent World Cup in Spain putting in strong performances against the best teams in the world despite being severely undersized.

These coaches were also on the lookout for potential players to recruit to university scholarship programmes in the Philippines and had heard about the talent and ability of our academy players, and their application in the classroom as well as between the lines of the basketball court.

As a result of their attendance at the camp we are proud to announce that camp attendee and Rangitoto College 5 ft 11 point guard Joseph Nunag has been offered a "full ride" scholarship to study and play basketball at Far Eastern University In Manila. Joseph was the starting point guard for Rangitoto last year who made it to the semifinals of the national secondary schools championship. Joseph's teammate at Rangitoto College and another NZBA athlete Tai Wynyard has just signed a letter of intent with the Kentucky Wildcats of the NCAA.

Far Eastern University is the premier programme in the Phillipines with the record for the most national university championships and the most alumni of any school playing in the PBA (national professional league), so this is an excellent opportunity!
